Working Glas Heroes: Peter Broderick - Playing Songs from his Folk Album Blackberry

Peter Broderick is an internationally renowned composer and musician who is equally at home playing the Big Top Tent at Con Smith Park as he is delighting audiences at the National Concert Hall.

Duration: 1 hour

Peter's sumptuous 2020 album Blackberry will provide the backbone of his Cavan Arts Festival show. In Blackberry the American native explores themes of family, relationships, and in this gorgeous selection of folk songs, all drenched in the wonders of nature.

Peter explains the idea behind the album and its name, saying: “When I first became obsessed with foraging edible wild plants a few years back, I wasn’t particularly excited about the humble blackberry, but I would soon return with great passion to this familiar fruit of my youth. Even in our most urban environments, the gnarled and resilient blackberry vines continue to weave themselves throughout, as if to keep reminding us where we come from.”

Peter is equally obsessed with foraging amongst musical undergrowth for nourishment with gospel and soul, spoken word and beat-boxing appealing to his appetite as much as rock and classical.

His sublime work Eyes Closed and Travelling has amassed over 52 million streams on Spotify, however he’s also beloved as a former member of pioneering indie band Efterklang. The prolific artist somehow finds time to work on restoring the archive of musical maverick Arthur Russell.

Peter appears at Cavan Arts Festival under the Working Glas Heroes banner, kindly supported by Creative Cavan.
